As tensions between police and protesters increase my mind keeps flashing to early October when I marched alongside people from the NYPD’s union. While at that time there had already been some arrests, macings, and skirmishes, a lot of officers were smiling and nodding their heads to the chants and most protesters were showing police nothing but respect.
Now, seven weeks later, despite elements of the government, media, and the general populace going to great lengths to paint protesters as a mob of crusty violent authority-hating degenerates, it is important to remember that Occupy is still a movement of regular everyday people, from your friendly neighborhood drum circle hippy to retired police chiefs. Respect is crucial.
